Where do we escape to, when our outer and inner worlds come crushing down on us? Escapism can be triggered by personal and collective experiences alike, and lead to a search for refuge in the physical or immaterial realm. The exhibition SHAPES OF SHELTER presents seven artistic positions that deal with mechanisms of searching for shelter. Fragile being, that does not have to be suppressed nor accommodated, emerges as the core narrative.

A video collage is projected from inside the tent-like installation »Open Secrets« by Isabella Fürnkäs. It shows alternating images of nature and moments of tactile perception. In her multimedia works, the artist deals with the individual’s dependency on the community and explores the question of how digital communication media effects not only the human psyche but also interpersonal relationships. The individual textile fragments of this tent as shelter are held together with rough stitches, allowing the viewer to sense the fragility of mental refuges in times of global digitalisation. At the same time, the images that stream out through the transparent beige shell can only be fully deciphered by the artist herself. Similar ciphers can be found in the drawings of the constantly expanding series »The Red Drawings« and »Insomnia Drawings«. Here, the artist uses drawing as a method of emotional discharge. Experiences and memories are captured on paper with a few lines and hatchings.
