When I first met Amalia, she told me about her childhood friend Holga. A few years later, I got to know Pucci through Lucy. Since then, whenever I thought of Amalia and Lucy, I’d wonder how Holga and Pucci were doing. Being away from home, my friends kept pictures and shared stories to remember their companions. Jodi Picoult reminds us that “home is not a place, but rather, the people you love”, so this could be an exhibition about love. But I think it’s more than that, because when I met Adriana I was also meeting Moji. I remember Francis coming to school with Jacob, Günther under Eleni’s arm at an opening in Berlin, Nico hibernating in Marte and Michael’s fridge, Issey flopping at Joni and Asai’s, King Louis going up and down at Philipp’s. I met Jungmyung and Josse’s Noodle when my flatmate catsat for them. Mina lives around the corner with Giovanni and Müge. Questo rolls around at Özgür and Sabo’s, not far from Lê and Anh. Spider, Geo and Jay are a train away. Lives intertwined, braided. I’m now thinking of Gato and Serge, Fifi and Choochoo with Tabitha, sneaky Wiener at Jennifer’s, Frankie behind Spencer when we called, Momo at Sydney’s, Semel and Koume hanging out with Soshiro. Bambi at Alexandra’s. Dido and Kasper. Hector and Ian. Love is home, so love is Elo for Davide and Matt, Wurzel for Isabella, Manfred for Krista, sleepy Tiffany for Ava, Tig for Cici, Rinko for Peng Ke. Home is love when Eddie plays with Steve, Teal dresses up Indigo, Ringo runs around Hernâni. Then there’s Rod slouching, posing, loved by Dena, Andrew and Sam. And Nuna being forever incandescent with DeSe. Night lights in dark times, stars. Not long ago, Dennis showed me Clovis, Teresa took in Dinis, Amalia and Ilia met Gemi, August found Asai and Joni, Lucy and Sean brought in a new family member, Genghis. Home being love. This is not an exhibition about love in that there’s no distance between them to extrapolate a critical framework. These are events, snapshots, flashes. This just is. Fleeting. Blinking. Winking love.
