Artists: Isabella Fürnkäs, Miriam Vlaming
Works: The Memory House
Through their work, both artists explore memory and the working of inner images. They view memory as something dynamic and composed of many layers that only comes to life through the interplay of image, material, and viewer. Both Séville Fürnkäs and Vlaming understand memories as a process in which the past and the present are inextricably intertwined.
Isabella Séville Fürnkäs presents The Memory House, a walk-in installation whose permeable shell of printed silk fabric forms an open structure in which images from collective and personal memory overlap. The house is less a place of preservation than a carrier of visual traces that can immediately appeal to and disturb the viewer. Miriam Vlaming, on the other hand, devotes her paintings to searching for connection and cohesion in a fragmented world. Through multi-layered applications of paint, she creates visual worlds in which the past and the present, as well as figures and environments, interpenetrate, developing their full meaning only in connection with the viewer.
