Works: L'Origine du monde

The project was initiated by five students of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf on the occasion of its 250th anniversary. The final presentation of the group project will take place in cooperation with the STUDIO FOR ARTISTIC RESEARCH.

The research work of the five students represents an investigation into gender-based power structures within the renowned institution. It is well known that the systematic discrimination and exclusion of non-male people has long been a problem - not only in art. However, there is a particular area of tension in art and in the Kunstakademie: wasn't the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf long regarded as a factory of artistic progress? How can discrimination and sexualized violence be reconciled with a seemingly progressive milieu?

The five students discussed these and many other questions with almost 30 interviewees. The resulting material has been turned into a cinema-length film, which already exceeded the audience capacity of the Künstlerverein Malkasten at its first screening, attracted national attention and represents a broadening of perspective for contemporary debates on the abuse of power in the cultural sector.

The exhibition at STUDIO FOR ARTISTIC RESEARCH is a group exhibition of the five students who initiated the project and a selection of interview partners who are part of the film. We are also pleased to announce the participation of Nan Hoover, Katharina Sieverding and Jody Korbach. The exhibition shows a range of female positions at the Kunstakademie, both in terms of media and content, who worked and continue to work there from 1967-2023.
