DROPS
The DROPS by Isabella Fürnkäs show a fascinating relation between the natural and the unnatural by enhancing something so mundane as liquid residue. It almost seems like the artist bedazzled the surface, on which the droplets are displayed: Due to their domed shape they allow the light to travel through them, making the ground, on which they are displayed almost sparkle. They shine with the richness of a crystal while simultaneously reflecting their bleak surroundings. But droplets do not just appear out of nowhere. Did they form on the ground, like a condensation or the sweat of a creature? Or did they fall like rainwater, from heavy clouds?
Massive in scale, the droplets are not bound to a certain source. They could be coming from nature – or the human body. The words inside them, like TASTE, WATER ME, TRUST and PLAY ME insinuate a more intimate connection towards the unknown liquid. It is an unspoken request, an invitation to use the drops. But as any undetermined fluid, it could be either danger or pleasure, vicious poison or energizing water. However, the ambiguity, that surrounds Isabella Fürnkäs’ work, does not distract from its captivating appearance. Like thirsty animals, the viewers will try to classify the objects, to understand their physicality and their meaning. Isabella Fürnkäs’ DROPS present the duality and beauty of these natural phenomena.
